I recently installed WP (I am new to WP). It is on host running IIS. It is hosted by someone else.

I used the fix mentioned in http://www.keyboardface.com/IIS-Permalinks/ to fix errors I got when I clicked any links on i.e. categories or recent posts. So I have that working now.

I wanted to have about section which shows up next to Home on top of the page. I created a new page for that. It shows up on the site but when I click the “About” it gives me an error Not Found.

What am I doing wrong? What can I do to fix it?

    Thanks.

Sorry, you must have tried when I was publishing, it was unpublished. Try it now.

    Thanks.

Well, you are the MS expert, you should know how to set up rewrite rules on those damned servers…
    The Page is there: http://www.bhargavs.com/?page_id=48
but your permalinks thing is not working with it.

I really had hardtime understanding permalink. Since the host is not under my control (it is hosted somewhere else).

I configured permalinks to custom structure “/%category%/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/”. That still did not work yesterday until after I implemented fix suggested in http://www.keyboardface.com/IIS-Permalinks/.

I suspect that the 404 redirects are not handling this page properly.

Can you help me correct this? I would love to fix this instead of working around the problem using 404 redirects.

p.s. I am Exchange expert, I would not know a thing about writing rewrite rules… 🙂

To be honest: if a client is hosted on a Win server I refuse to do anything with their WP until they move to a decent *nix host. It just doesn’t make sense to be hosted on a Win machine if you don’t use any special MS gizmo.

Sorry, I would know what to suggest for you if hosted on a *nix server but in this case I have no idea.
Did you see the Troubleshooting section on Using_Permalinks?

I’ve talked to a number of people setting up their first website, and it’s a common misconception that you need Windows web hosting if you have a Windows computer at home.

    I know that 🙂
Although I have seen honest hosts that have in their pre-sale FAQ a simple statement that you don’t need Windows web hosting unless you need something special like .asp etc.
(Don’t tell me, I know that, too: people never read the FAQ and manuals…)

If I am willing to let go the fancy of “Pretty” permalink, it works.

I used the fix from http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/wordpress-tip-on-permalink-options

php.ini and /index.php/ in permalink. I removed the fix from http://www.keyboardface.com/IIS-Permalinks/ while I was at it.

I have “Almost Pretty” permalinks but hey someone said Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. 🙂
