    Anybody know how permalinks actually work?

    I change the permalink mapping and it works just fine, but the .htaccess file is unchanged. Nothing in .htacces bears any relation to the permalink scheme I’m using.

    Changing the permalink scheme changes someting, but it’s not the .htaccess file

    It isn’t really a “mystery”. Since version 2.x WP handles the permalinks internally – so the .htaccess file remains unchanged.
