• Hi there,
I’m sure this is a fairly common problem, but I have yet to come across a solution to it in my searching.

I want to install WordPress only one time and be able to host multiple blogs with various styles from the single installation on different domain names. All of the domains hosted by the same company.

I installed WordPressMU, but I am having trouble figuring out how to configure it to work with multiple domain names and act like individual installations. For example, I want one site to be at http://ryanmerrill.net/ complete with a WordPress theme and all functionality, but I want a separate Web site to be at http://refreshcincinnati.com/, without having to install WordPress twice. Is this possible?

When I went add a blog in my WPMU setup screen, the only way I can add a new sites was if it was suffixed by .ryanmerrill.net, so it looks like only subdomains can be had using WPMU?

Can someone please let me know if I am going about this right? If not, I guess I have to install multiple versions of WordPress. Although that seems a bit wasteful of space.

Thanks in advance for the help!

    Ryan

  • I am real new at this.. so I apologize in advance for being frustrated!!

Have a similar question…. I have looked at the related posts and variations of the same question…. not seeing a straight simple answer.

Simply put… would like to have one wordpress.org installation, would like to have multiple domain sites not necessarily from same hosting company, my current wordpress site was installed thru thru Lunar Pages Hosting.. works fine.

    1) Seems like this can be done, true? What is best way to do this?
    2) If not… do I need to set up different installations that would have their own database, have differnt folders to manage this? Sure doesn’t seem very efficient… but if that’s it.. ok.

    Thank you,

    Ron

Unfortunately, I am also unable to help. Having the same problem. I can tell you that I tried downloading wordpress twice and trying it that way but it didn’t work. Made a big mess and ended up corrupting my primary domain name. Have spent the whole day repairing. I don’t suggest downloading wordpress again. Keep searching for the answer. Will post here if I find it. -bnell

    1) This can be done, yes. Install WordPress Multi-User – using subdomain mode so that later, domain mapping may be used to direct different domain names to respective blogs within WPMU install.

I haven’t used the lunarpages webhost yet, and you have to check whether your hosting plan meets the minimum server requirements for WPMU where virtual subdomains may be added. e.g. host has enabled wildcard alias for apache and created a wild card dns for my domain.

I suggest you check out the WPMU readme at
    http://trac.mu.wordpress.org/browser/trunk/README.txt
It’s NOT a 5-minute install like regular WordPress.org – some experts with right server requirements can install in that amount of time though and others curse the application and give up. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip mercime. Downloading as I type.
