• I seem to have lost the theme templates when I use Add New Page. All the php files are there in the Appearance>Editor.

Also, when I visit my site there is one of the theme pages but when I click on a top menu item I get a 404 page.

I have tried reinstalling the theme, and when reimporting the theme templates I got an error message:

    ErrorStatus: error
    errorThrown: Internal Server Error
    Import is finished.

    Any advice welcome.

    Hi Marlene,

Here are two grabs of the info I was originally sent and what I have put into the config.php.

    REMOVED IMAGES

When I go to my website I get a host provider default index page, and when I try to log in to my site wp-admin I get a 404 page.

Maybe it would be better for you to help me out.

    Duncan

    OK,

You can delete all the links you sent me in your last two posts now because of the sensitive info.

So when you use the password there, you’re getting an error still.
    That seems weird.

Let me try one more thing on my end.

Email me at [ redacted, support is not offered via email, Skype, IM etc. only in the forums ]

    Edited:
Ok, I looked at all your screenshots and realized from your last one, that your wordpress installation folder does not match your website location.

Change the folder name (via FTP) to match the name of the new website you are working on.
Having your folder match gives the server a place to map your files.

Let’s see if that allows you to login.

I removed the links. If you want to link, just paste the URL in if you don’t know how to use HTML (though that’s just this: <a href="http://mylink.com">LINKNAME</a>)

CreativeNaturalista – Please do not ask people to email you. We know you have the best interests of the users at heart, but we try to keep all communications ON the forum so that the next person who comes along can get help. If everyone uses email, then we’re not helping more than one person.

Perhaps it may be quicker for me to help by working with you to set things up on the site?

Please don’t do that: when you offer to get admin access and/or FTP access then you’re really going too far and that’s not cool.

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Forum_Welcome#The_Bad_Stuff

If you are given admin credentials, you are potentially liable for any potential damage that maybe caused, not only by yourself but anyone accessing the system. Even if you do not provide warranty with your own product.

Unless you’re willing to take responsibility for that user’s installation from now on (and they should NOT let you do that) then please do not ask or suggest that someone provide you those admin or FTP details.

You can provide assistance here, ask for log data, you can make recommendations and even suggest changes. But do not seek admin or FTP access. That’s just going too far.

Thanks Mika, please delete my email addy. I was not sure but I’m grateful for that direction. Was not trying to go after his login info, just trying to help guide.

    Duncan,

Do not name your folder/directory after the full URL (www.yourwebsite.com) or database name (for security reasons).

For instance if you wanted to created the website www.mcdonalds.com then you would create a folder/directory named mcdonalds.com on your server and place your WordPress files in there.

    Hi Charlene,

Hope you haven’t got in trouble.

I tried your suggestion but still no joy. You did mean creating the folder under public_html didn’t you?

    Duncan

    Hi Duncan,

No, I was just made aware of keeping the topic online 🙂

    Yes, that’s what I meant.

Explain where you were trying to install the WordPress site and let’s try again. Save your wp-config.php file on your desktop so that you will always have that information.
I’m game if you are 🙂

    Hi Charlene,

I installed WordPress to my host provider via ftp to File Manager>public_html. WordPress did work OK where it was on the host until I lost access to the theme templates.

I think I’ve got to go now – it’s nearly 2 am here.

    Duncan

    Hi Duncan,

When you get a moment, make sure that you no longer have two wordpress installations.

If your website should be on the main level (public_html) then you only need to upload the WordPress files there and override the old versions. Make sure that the wp-config.php file that you updated is part of the files you keep.

If your new WordPress install is supposed to be on a subdomain, then make sure that the folder/directory that you create for the new site is named after the site and that the WordPress installation files are placed there.

At this point you should just be moving new WordPress files onto your server. Make sure to have the wp-config.php file that I suggested you keep on your desktop. This information should be in the wp-config.php file on your server.

    I hope this helps,

    Charlene

    Hi Charlene,

Success at last! I put a support request to my host provider support to check about installing WordPress. They said not to use c_panel but there was another install facility there where I could just select WordPress and install it without having to do download WP and upload it or do anything with wp_config. There were a few boxes to fill in but nothing complicated.

Still don’t know why it went wrong but it all works fine now.

Thanks very much for all your help.

    Duncan

    Hi Duncan,

I’m excited that they were able to send you to a software to help you install. I figured they should have something (most hosting providers do) to help make this simple 🙂

Congrats and much luck in setting up your new website!

    Charlene
