Menus

I am pretty new to WP. Before WP I used direct html coding many years ago.
I love the ease of creating websites with WP.

I am using a left column menu via the ‘custom menu widget’ and find it very easy, but I have not figured out how to change the menu item sequence. When I add a new menu item it places it at the end. How can I determine the position of a new menu item ?
