Media Library is not functioning correctly.
-
I’ve managed to rebuild the majority of my site, just. As I am a photographer and looking to create an image intensive Blog I am simply stumped with regards to the performance, or lack thereof, of the Media Library.
This all started after upgrading to 4.4.2. Key points are:
30sec++ to load just the Media Pane
Unresponsive Error message with the option to kill or wait
30sec delay after selecting image for it to display in single pane
30sec+ to revert back to the Media Library
Unable to load more than 300MB worth of imagery as that renders the site unnavigable.Outside of the media library I have regular navigation speeds, I’m on Fiber Optic in Japan. Never had issues prior to this.
Anyone else with this kind of similar issue? Got it resolved??
Cheers,
Mark

You know, you could setup a new installation on the same server for testing. Just put it in a sub-directory of your current installation. That way you’ll have an installation that you can hopefully reproduce the problem and try steps to solve it without breaking your real site.
The copy would be on the same server running the same PHP so if it’s your environment on your server causing it then you should be able to reproduce it.
Just make sure you have a complete file and database backup first.
http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
http://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_Up_Your_Database
http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_BackupBackups are your friend and can get you out of a jam if necessary. Just make sure your backup of your files and database are not stored on your web server.
*Looks*
Your directory where you installed WordPress is here.
/home2/seawild/public_html/
In that
public_htmlcreate a new directory calledtest-devand intest-devcopy (copy, not move!) all of your files from/home2/seawild/public_html/into/home2/seawild/public_html/test-devMake sure you don’t move them, that would be bad. Copies are what you want.
Once that is done edit the copy of
wp-config.phpin/home2/seawild/public_html/test-devand change the line that reads$table_prefix = 'wp_';and change it to something new such as
$table_prefix = 'test_';Then visit http://seawildearth.com/test-dev/ and you’ll be prompted to install a new blank WordPress there. DON’T PANIC, that is not your main site. That site is safe and sound with the old
$table_prefixat the existing http://seawildearth.com/ URL.Once you’ve installed the new site in that directory then activate all of your plugins and your theme. Then you can test and see if you can reproduce the problem on the test-dev installation.
If so we can proceed to walk you through steps to narrow down the cause of your problem.
Please, that is all in Swahili to me. I think one of the main issues with this well intentioned service is that folks tend to think everyone here has knowledge and experience with back end administration. Sadly I don’t.
That may sound a little weird to some but it’s very much a case of horses for courses. Now if you wanted to swim outside of a cage with Great White Sharks then you’d call on someone to guide you through that, someone like me.
I don’t understand the coded instructions you inform me of, all it does is help with that frustration build up.
@jon (Kenshino) are you instructing me to keep the two locations marked, delete the rest showing in this pane and then replace with those folders and files from the File found within the 4.4.2 zip file?
I can’t understand why the WP Content file also only says 4KB when there is almost 600MB of disk space used for the site thus far, again that may also highlight my lack of understanding at this level.
Select all except wp-content and wp-config.php
Delete selected.
Make sure you backup first.
I have a backup of my site in my Dropbox.
I have deleted all except the Folder and php file as mentioned, now trying hard to upload two folders, WP-Admin and WP-Includes. I have FTP’d them with Cyberduck and I can see them in the Public HTML root directory under my FTP Account name but I cannot seem to copy them into the WP Directory. Only option is file by file, no drag and drop option?
Nightmare.
I have replaced everything as instructed and now no web site and a Page Not Found sign from Host Gator??? I tried to find a WP Login Page, nothing?
Now what?
I see your site is running. Did you restore a backup?
By the way, perhaps you want to consider switching to a host that will actually manage / fix your WordPress problems for you. It’s obvious to me that you need some level of professional help.
Try Googling for Managed WordPress Hosting.
I tried replacing the site as you mentioned but it didn’t work. That may be down to my ineptitude alas we will never know. I wiped the complete database, reinstalled WordPress which should have solved the problem right? I mean how many failing instal events can one have when starting from scratch?
I then reinstalled my site from the last backup I had on my Dropbox. As it was a backup made when I had the issue, guess what, I still have the damned issue.
I’ve paid for subscriptions for the Theme and plugins, I’ve paid for hosting, I’m sick of bloody paying for crap that doesn’t seem to work. I’m happy to pay for things that do work, but I have meat balls not crystal balls so who’s to say whoever I next select as hosting options aren’t just designed around fleecing clients, which is my opinion of what I’ve experienced of late.
I’ve never had such an issue before and I have had many WordPress sites over the years each with varying complexities of themes and plugins etc. This issue is unique. It has the Theme engineers stumped, it has the host gator support stumped.
I do not need managed WP Hosting simply for the fact that I now how to run my site, how the basic internal structure and requirements work but when it comes down to digging around in root directories to fix something that shouldn’t be broken in the first place?
That mixed with the fact that the cheapest WP Managed Hosting I found starts at around US$20 a month. This is almost double what I am currently playing and will be superfluous to my needs as and when this one issue gets sorted out.
This report from a highly respected freelance WordPress developer:
“I logged into your site and everything is up an running. I added the custom CSS to hide the Sell Media search box.
While browsing your files through FTP I noticed that the site is not generating thumbnails for the large files. Any file over 1MB does not have a thumbnail all others do. That explains the slow Media Library page. WordPress is loading large images and scaling them down with CSS.
I have no idea why it’s doing that. I checked your PHP settings and there’s plenty of memory to generate thumbnails”.
So it seems the issue IS a WordPress issue.
Hi, I am a new WordPress user, just started 2 weeks ago. All was working fine until recently I am unable to load new images to the Media Library for any new posts that I am drafting. Any ideas on what the problem might be? I don’t have any plug-ins. I am using dyad theme.
Hi ksheth,
You may wish to start your own thread as I doubt anyone will find your message if it’s buried in this thread. I am not a programmer as this thread also points out so please maybe address someone better equipped to answer your questions.Cheers,
Mark.ok thanks will do.
There is no point continuing to insist that WordPress is at fault. If a newly installed copy (with no backup dumped onto it) doesn’t have that issue on a properly configured server, then no it is not a WordPress issue.
I just booted up another instance of WordPress for a client site – no issues there.
If thumbnails are not loading, there are likely 2 reasons
1. GD support is not enabled – host issue
2. One of your plugin/theme screwed up the media image size via possibly the add_image_size functionI made a completely fresh reinstallation of WordPress to my HostGator server. I then rebuilt the site, and the issue persists. I changed themes thinking that was the issue, and the problem persists. Show me where in that process the finger of doubt can point at anywhere other than WordPress.
I am very happy for you that you don’t have this issue with WordPress but that doesn’t mean that the issue doesn’t exist. Not every car that runs off a production line runs the same as the previous vehicle on the same production line. If everything worked perfectly because one example of said product did then wouldn’t this be a perfect, and somewhat boring, World?
When I get to the bottom of the issue I will be sure to update this board, but until then I think it best to consider that there could be a very slim possibility that there could be an issue with WordPress in this case.
