Make nav links visible after hovering

Hi.
I am new to WordPress. I downloaded the Modality theme. I am getting the hang of everything except for the navigation links. When you hover over them, the text disappears. There is a setting in the backend to change it, but it’s not working. Tried to play around with CSS styling, but that does not seem to be working either. Is there a trick to making the navigation links always visible? Better yet, why would the theme options customizer not work on the navigation links?
