Just a question with using the maintenance mode plugin during an upgrade. Since it’s suggested to deactivate all plugins during an upgrade, is there a way we can disable the blog during that downtime and providing a message to visitors? Or is it alright to keep the plugin activated during an upgrade?

  • I was upgrading this morning, and tested leaving the Maintenance Mode plugin activated during upgrade (while all other plugins were deactivated) and it worked perfectly on my localhost site copy.

Also worked perfectly on the live site as well (version WP2.1 to 2.2.2) – though I had all the backups etc just in case!!

Tried that, worked ok during upgrade from 2.5 to 2.6. But do not log out after you have activated maintenance mode. I did (to test the screen) and I had trouble getting back in – even http://www.example.com/wp-admin/ showed the maintenance screen. I renamed the MM plugin folder on the server and got back in. When logged in, I renamed the MM folder back and disabled the MM screen in the correct way.
