Same issue:
I just installed Mailchimp for WP and the status is NOT CONNECTED and MailChimp returned the following error:
Service Unavailable.
I checked my IP address and it is not blacklisted. I checked PHP CURL version
cURL support enabled, cURL Information 7.36
I have the plugin logging “everything” and the debug log has “– Nothing here. Which means there are no errors!>”
I have asked my provider to look at it and they do not see any reason that this should not be working.

I had been having problems with MailChimp connecting for over a month and today was the day I thought I would fix it!

same problem here: NOT CONNECTED; 503 code, service not available,
but the service IS AVAILABLE => service responded when tested using curl per mailchimp docs !!

Please note that this issue is caused when there is a connection problem between your website & MailChimp.com. There is not much we can do from our end. I would recommend checking https://mc4wp.com/kb/solving-connectivity-issues/ for some steps on finding the cause of this issue.
