    Have you asked your hosts if they had any temporary problems?

    They keep coming back to me and telling me they’ve fixed various things. Is it more likely it’s a hosting problem and not a WordPress problem?

    If this is happening regularly, then yes – it does sound like a hosting problem. Perhaps it might be an idea to start looking around for a new hosting company before anything really major happens?
