    Dear community,

I don’t know to whom should I talk to regarding my project which might be related to the word “press”, and I need your help please. I am planning to build my own SaaS similar to WordPress.com using php Laravel Framework for development.

Since I believe in community word, GNU, and Open Source Freedom the way WordPress believe, I chose to build something similar with freedom of choice in mind. I would like one day to have something similar to wordpress so the community can benefit from both sides.

What I will call Laravelpress.org CMS is on the idea of WordPress concept to take Blogging and simple CMS to next dimension using the same concept and similar ecosystem.

To be honest and clear with you, I would like to share the following discussion at laravel forum https://laracasts.com/discuss/channels/general-discussion/building-laravel-cms, hence, please be honest with me and let me know if the word “press” at the end of my domains laravelpress.com or laravelpress.org will create and problems between you and me in the future, if it does or doesn’t please show me some documentation so I can handle it to my lawyer.

I love wordpress from the bottom my heart and you have no idea how much you have inspired me to take wordpress and blogging concept to the next level, but after deep study, I found out that wordpress development foundation using the current method of developing without a framework similar to Laravel has made wordpress in my belief peaked somehow (that’s my opinion), which have and will create too many problems and security flaws on the future based on too many other developers opinions as well.

Please let me know if what I am doing won’t upset anybody, I just want to have a freedom of choice for me and to the rest of the world to choose between wordpress or laravelpress.

    Thanks,

    Imad Daou

I must be living under a lucky star. My second legal question today. 😉

IANAL but if you’re just using “press” and not “wordpress” then no one should have any issues with that. You’re fine.

If you were asking to use “wordpress” then yes, you’d be sent these links.

    http://wordpressfoundation.org/trademark-policy/
    https://wordpress.org/about/domains/

But you’re not so it is all good. There are many companies and projects out there that use “press” in their name. As long as you don’t infringe on any trademarks it should be good.

But again, IANAL. When in doubt contact a lawyer and ask them. That’s what they’re there for.

    Hi Jan,

Thank you so much for your help, I am so happy to hear that 😉 trust me, no infringement over here. As you can tell, I just want to have another choice for me and to the rest of GNU and Open source community to pick and choose from, which all will be based on the the same philosophy that wordpress, GNU, and Open source is based on. That’s the philosophy that I am talking about http://wordpressfoundation.org/philosophy/

Again, thank you Jan for your help. Is that it, or should I contact someone else as well in wordpress? If Yes, would you please share their contact with me. I will confirm with my layer as well and update this post.

    Have a wonderful weekend!
