• Hi I am trying to change the info I have in the lefthandcolumn and the righthandcolumn on bequiablog.com. How do I do that and where are those files located? I did find righthand and lefthand column files under the template folder called journalizedsand and changed the info but it didnt translate back to the site.

  • if using sidebar widgets
    admin – appearance – widgets

    if not
you should have some types of sidebar.php in your theme
    admin – appearance – editor

Thanks Samboll, Yes i have the sidebar lefthandcolumn and righthandcolumn in the theme folder but when i change the info nothing happens on the page… I am sure this was not the case before as I remember changing it there and it used to work.

In the theme editor it gives different files of the theme I am using. If I go ahead and change the code for the lefthandcolumn which I can do there is no option to save. Below the file code the page says. If this file were writable I could edit it.

In which case, you need to make the files writable, either directly through FTP/your file transfer protocol/service or SSH or something similar.

Here is one article that documents a way to do so, though if you do some googling or searching through the forums, you will find more articles/instructions:

    Writable Files

oh I see you are using an old version of wordpress.
In that case, any file you edit in the wordpress editor must have a chmod of 666 to be able to save changes.
When you are done, chmod files back to 644 for security.

Thanks Samboll. How do I change those permissions again pls? And does it make sense to update the wordpress first and then do the changes. Thanks you, much appreciated.

you will need to use your ftp client to connect to site and files or use your host’s file manager to change the permissions.

I always advise upgrading – your version is not secure any more.
If you choose to do so – I recommend downloading this plugin to help you
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/
install it and use it for the upgrade. when it is done delete the plugin as wordpress has automatic upgrades built in now.

ok thanks so much. I am going to upgrade.

I noticed one funny thing though. I just changed to another host a few days ago and even though I just changed the permissions nothing is happening and it still says “If this file were writable you could edit it”. That may also explain why any changes to the leftcolumn and rightcolumn doesnt translate into the site. I think the admin panel is still the one located on my old host. WEIRD. If this is the case I don’t even know what to do in any case, I am going to try upgrading as u recommended.

I just got word from my new host saying the site dns hasnt been completed…. SH…t All this for nothing. I will look into updating and making the changes as soon as the dns is through.
