jquery to update sidebar?

So I’m using jQuery to do some simple interaction and animation effects in the main content area. My question is: is it possible to reload the sidebar (or a portion of the sidebar) from the jQuery script?

Essentially, I’d like to call the function that builds one sidebar widget to reload that piece, without reloading the entire page.
