• For about the last month my site (http://nerdspeak.co/) has been running oddly slow. I say oddly slow, because it seems to be fickle. Sometimes the site loads in around a second, and others it takes several seconds to load. From my very non-scientific research, it seems that the site seems to load a lot slower when the users browser is building the cache on their first visit. However, every time after that the load time is pretty reasonable.

I’ve noticed this most often after I’ve cleared the cache (in W3 Total Cache) after making some changes to plugins or whatnot.

So here is a test of the site right after I cleared all of the caches from W3TC: http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/cv1PJ9/nerdspeak.co

    28 seconds is absolutely insane!

But here is the very next test after the testing site was able to build a cache of my site: http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/YE5rF/nerdspeak.co

Now I don’t know much about coding and web design, but I know there is something fishy going on here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Isn’t that the point of the cache? The results are as I would expect and I don’t see why you think there’s a problem.

    Maybe I’m missing something…

Okay, I understand what you are saying. But the issue is that initial visit. I highly doubt that any user is going to stick around for several seconds just waiting for page to load. I’m really just trying to figure out why that initial load time is so slow. I get that it takes a little time to cache the site, but isn’t 20+ seconds really excessive?

If you don’t clear the cache the user won’t have to wait. It came up real quick for me.

Okay. Maybe I’m just being paranoid. It just always seems to load slowly for me and some of my writers. Do you know why it could possibly take so long for the site to come up? When I ran the test today without clearing the cache, it still took 20+ seconds to load for the first test. It’s just odd to me.

If you’re on a shared server your load times can vary greatly. Your own connection speed will also effect things.

It opened for me in less than 2 seconds.

You can contact your hosting company for advice on increasing performance or google “optimizing wordpress site”.

But honestly, I think it’s good!

I had a feeling that my hosting service is probably the biggest source in fluctuation. Oh well..
Anyway, thank you so much for putting my mind at ease. I truly appreciate it.

My dashboard has been loading extremely slow for a week or so now. Just clicking”new post” to make a post or navigating anywhere within the dashboard is taking forever and is a huge hassle.

Mmm, yeah I get that same problem Kelsey. It started about the same time that my site started loading slowly for me and my writers. Sometimes I have to hit the link to my dashboard a few times just to get it top open.

I have had sites like that and it is most certainly the host’s server.

Contact them and complain when it happens. Live Chat seems to work best. They can check if someone else you’re sharing with is abusing the system (this happens alot with shared servers)

They can also check your error logs. It could be something else. If you google slow wordpress admin you’ll see lots of things.
