• 1. I started a new Powweb account a week ago.
    2. I used Simple Scripts to install WordPress & BuddyPress in the root htdocs folder. I’ve read WP Multi-site needs to reside in the root folder.
    3. The domain I associated WP with is mydesign.powweb.com. I chose this domain as my base for WP Multi-site network installation.
    4. I couldn’t get domain mapping to point to my domain WPblogs.com where I imported blog files from an existing WP blog.
    5. The domain WPblogs.com kept pointing me to mydesign.powweb.com page instead of WPblogs.com with the WP files I imported. (I know the import files are nearly complete b/c I tested it in mydesign.powweb.com and the posts were in tact. I deleted the files afterward.)
    6. I thought it was a simple domain pointing issue and called Powweb for help with domain management. I was told conflicting things by different techs but mainly the last bit of info is I can’t have WordPress and BuddyPress installed in the same htdocs folder. The tech uninstalled BuddyPress and now when I go to mydesign.powweb.com/wp-admin I get “One or more database tables are unavailable. The database may need to be repaired.” The Powweb backup did not work. I’m not sure if installing BuddyPress in the same folder will map my data files again.

I’m willing to fix the problems by doing another install but before I do I have a few questions from WP Multi-site experienced users.

    1. Was my domain mapping problem a file structure install problem or a domain management problem?
    2. When I use Simple Scripts to install WP in htdocs with multi-site network in mind, where does the BuddyPress Simple Script installation go?
    3. Can I use mydesign.powweb.com as my domain for my WordPress installation and then modify WP to be multi-site. I may want to use mydesign.powweb.com as a landing page for design services in the future. Is that permissible?
    4. I’ve read installation guidelines on domain management and I’m still lost on how to map the actual domains once the plugin is activated. Are there detailed instructions on actual mapping available?

    Thank you community.

    1. I would say your domain mapping problem is a misunderstanding as to how it work with regards to WP.

    2. I have no idea about SimpleScripts. BuddyPress is a WordPress PLUGIN, and should need no external script management.

    3. If you own it, you can use it. I would suggest using SubFOLDER sites, though.

    4. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/ and http://ottopress.com/2010/wordpress-3-0-multisite-domain-mapping-tutorial/

    4. I couldn’t get domain mapping to point to my domain WPblogs.com where I imported blog files from an existing WP blog.

That isn’t how domain mapping (and WordPress) work.

Domain mapping would be mydesign.powweb.com/wpblogs (for example) is mapped to WPblogs.com – Thus WPblogs.com is VIRTUAL and secretly lives back on the mydesign URL.

So make it all on mydesign.powweb.com/wpblogs FIRST. THEN you map the domain and point it to mydesign.powweb.com (outside of WP). THEN you use the plugin to say ‘mydesign.powweb.com/wpblogs == wpblogs.com’

Ipstenu, Thank you for the detailed reply.

Could you please explain your comment so I can incorporate your advice during my install.

Read http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network if you have not already

    Subfolder == subdirectory. Same thing.
