    Hi,

I am a total newbie; any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

I am trying to install WP and I get this error message when I try and open /wp-admin/install.php:

    “Error stablishing a database connection”

In my wp-config.php document, I belive that my database name, MySQL username and passwrod are all correct. So, I am assuming that the problem is with the hostname. I have tried localhost and a coupe of other things, and nothing has worked. I have saved phpMyAdmin in the sites folder in my root directory (as opposed to documents).

    Any ideas?

    THANKS!!!
    lauren

um..do i actually have to set my database up with a host? (such as godaddy?) i have been following the directions in a book to set up a blog, and it didn’t mention anything more about a host.

From the book, I got the impression that it was Apache + php +MySQL + wordpress = blog

Like i said, total beginner! thanks for responding!

Godaddy is one of the hosts that you do need to put in the specific server for. Localhost won’t work. Look in your admin panel for the database for something like mysql123.secureserver.net.

Sorry just assumed you had a host so I could be certain you were using the right DB_HOST.

If you are using xampp or the like, maybe this will help:

NO, need to apologize! Surely, I am confusing you.

I am trying to just use my local host….not a third party. I don’t have to use a third party, right?

    Thanks for the posts!

I found the problem! Turns out that it was not the host name I was writing incorrectly. I didn’t realize that the user name was “root”. I had that part wrong. It’s ok if you are laughing. 🙂 Fingers crossed that I won’t be back for a while!

    Thanks, guys!!

I am having a problem too about installing WP, it seems like it can’t detect the database name.

I tried deleting the username and the db name just to redo it again. but when i add a username and a db name again a prefix word of digifoto_ shows. I think that’s the problem but i don’t know where I will go to remove that.

I hope someone can help me so I can start with the blog.

    regards
