    HELP!

My site fell to the worm that was going around.

1-I uploaded clean WP files to the server
-Got the site back online last evening (10-14).

3-Now, how do I get my posts out of my old database to the new site/database….OR How do I get my new WP files to point to my old database (which has all of our posts–2600+) in it?

I backed up the database and had it in my computer files, but it is 30 MB and when I try to upload it, the WP panel says the file can only be no larger than 8 megs.

DOES anyone have a step-by-step method that I can switch (or retain my old database, I don’t care…I just don’t want to lose my all of our articles).

I’ve been at this for a few days and nights, so please make it completely easy to follow…I’m very tired.

    Thank you

  • When your old database is just on your server and you’re absolutely positive that it’s clean, just edit the wp-config file of the new install to point to the old database.
One thing to keep in mind is that you don’t want to ‘hang’ a 2.8.4 install to an older database. If the database is from an older install, install that first, connect the two and upgrade.

    Thanks a million.

Just to make sure I’m doing it correctly.

Install 2.5 or 2.3.3 or whatever the older WP database was connected to originally. Then edit the config file to point to the database. THEN upgrade to 2.8.4.

OKAY, two questions: 1-how do I find out what version of wordpress was on the database last? 2-where do I get a copy of that version of wp?

I have 3 or 4 versions in my files, but I’m not sure which was the last version that was hooked to the database.

and once again, thanks a million!

You deleted the whole thing and you don’t know what version you ran?

    Ah, I think it was 2.3.3 (web.archives.org).

    Thanks.

I looked at June 2008 and it said 2.5.1. But your info applies.

UPDATE: I uploaded clean 2.5.1 files to the website and checked the wp-config.php file and it’s okay.

When I access the website (http://deathby1000papercuts.com), now, I get a completely blank page.

I’ve accessed the admin panel and all of our old posts and comments, etc.
I have went to the dashboard and then to “EXPORT” page.
I have tried to export and it won’t export.
I click on the button on the bottom of the export page and it gives me a blank page.
Is there anything I’m missing here?

Hm, that beats me too… I never tried what happened when you install another version of WP than the one the database was connected to.
You have a backup of the database, right? What if you a newer WP (2.6 or so, don’t immediately jump to 2.8.4), does it ask to upgrade?
Maybe somebody has a better idea?

    Thanks.

    I tried with 2.5.1, 2.3.? and 2.8.4.

I am resigned to copying all of the pertinent info from all 3278 posts and the comments and re-doing the new wordpress from scratch.

It’s something we had to do in March 08 when we moved from our old Blogger site and Word Press would not import those files. They would import to our site at WP.com, but not to our new site. The WP.com import also did not (and doesn’t work today) on the new site.

I tried importing files from Aug 07-March 08 that were already contained on dbkp.wordpress.com and they simply won’t import.

If anyone has a clue, I’d be happy to hear it. Otherwise, I’m resigned to doing this again by hand and it taking us another 72 hours to get back online.

I also have a mutiny on my hands from all of the people who want us to consider a new blogging platform. Can’t say I blame them, but I’m too busy to consider it at the moment.

    Thanks, Gangleri, for trying!

Have you tried using a different browser? Which browser are you using when you try to do this export? I find that sometimes Firefox will choke, and Opera will get it right. No idea why.

Have you tried going in via PHPMyAdmin and just doing an SQL dump of the post and comment tables? That contains the site’s posts and pages, and comments, respectively. Worth a shot since it looks like, at this point, you have nothing to lose (except the rest of your sanity!). 😉

Why don’t you contact me off forum (check my profile for email addy), and I can try to help you when I get home from my second job at 11PM? I hate to see all your work scrapped. And I have had years to practice wrestling with WP databases (since Sept. 2004).

    Jonimueller,

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, I used different browsers, computers, etc.

THANKFULLY, We are back on line!! There’s some files that have to be uploaded and fixed, but we should be pretty much back to normal by Saturday (10-17-09) evening–instead of next week sometime.

Our template is still “bent out of shape and 5 files of graphics and pictures are missing, but that will be fixed by this evening

It was something that the tech at our IP host did in the beginning to try and get us back up last Saturday night.

THANKS to everyone here who helped!
