Image uploading not working

Hey friends!

My image uploading is just a mess.

ORIGINALLY: Tried to upload via every part of the wordpress backend including changing to the older loader, always got an error message BUT there was a full sized file in my Media area with all the correct details, just not visible (no thumbnail and not when “viewed”).

THEN: It no longer gives me an error message but everything else is the same. Here’s an example on the site itself.

I tried using an FTP to change file permissions to 744, etc, no dice. I also tried several different browsers, cleared cache, yada yada. I’m at a loss. This entire installation has been a wreck but it’s my second try and I had to get tech support from my host to do it, so I’m loath to try a full reinstall (their cpanel doesn’t have the ability to install).
