Image alt and description tags

Hi there,

I’m a bit new to WP so please bear with me…

I’m working with a theme my client purchased. I’m trying to figure out why there isn’t an alt attribute on gallery images in this theme and how I might enable it.

For each gallery, the featured image’s alt text is the title text for the gallery, not the alt text I entered in the media attachment page.

For each image in the lightbox, the alt attribute has simply been removed, even though I’ve entered alt text for each image. The description areas and caption areas on the media attachment page don’t seem to be of any use either.

I need alt text as well as a hook to add captions for each image in these lightbox galleries, and I’m not sure why that attribute isn’t working as expected.
