• I want to be able to have permalinks to all my entries, but I’ve got no idea how to use this .htaccess bit. Mod_Rewrite is turned on and everything in Apache- Now what do I need in terms of .htaccess?
Oh, and- I tried making the file .htaccess (I’m using Mac OS X) and it won’t let me make a file with a period as the first character. Any thoughts?
Yea, I’m a noob. But what can you do..
Any help would be hot hot hot

  • Copy and save what is suggested as your permalink htaccess.
Use a plain text editor, not a wordprocessor to do this. Whatever is equivalent to Notepad on the mac would be good.
Matters not right now what you call it.
Upload it to your WP directory, and using your ftp client, rename it to .htaccess
If you then cannot see it, look through your ftp client for the option to display hidden / system /server files.

When does this take effect? I turned on the permalink etc. in the WP setup; edited my .htaccess accordingly; but still no archives. Is there a 24-hour click? that can’t be right. So is there some sort of “reload”? Or what?

    It should work straight away.
How are you accessing your archives ? Or trying to ?

Toss up a link to your site, might prove quite useful in helping you out. 😉
This way we can see if your ModRewrites are working.

Seems to be working right to me. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Guess you have it all figured out! 😉
Your time could have been off for the first post. IE your server is in a different location as you.
