• Just downloaded fresh wordpress 3.2.1.zip but it seems .htaccess file is missing. Do I need to create that file manually?

  • If it is missing then you can create one. It will not hurt anything.

If it is not present on the remote server, create one and FTP it up to the site’s root folder or review adding files per your web host panel.

When a site is ‘installed’ (certain operations are performed on initial site setup at first login by default) on the remote server (in a Linux/PHP environment) a .htacess file should be created and furthermore would be modified if using permalinks. If it is not, then WordPress does not have the proper permissions to the WordPress root folder….check with your web host.
