.htaccess crashed my site
-
Hello,
I am new to all of this and am working on a new site for a client. I have set up a staging directory using FileZilla. So when you go to “examplesite.com/staging” you are prompted to login before you can see the site I am working on.I was trying to get the permalinks to display “examplesite.com/staging/page” instead of “examplesite.com/staging/index.php/page” (I must have accidentally set it to the later when I was setting it all up and didn’t realize it)
When I went to change this in the template under settings, I get this message:
“If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.”At the time I didn’t know what this was since I had already changed the permalink once when I set this all up, and I couldn’t find the .htaccess file on FileZilla. I read a few posts and one said to “Upload a blank document, and in FileZilla change the name to .htaccess, also make sure permissions are 655 or higher”
I did this, and went back to my site only to find a 500 error page… I went back to FileZilla and can’t find the .htaccess file!!!! I have done the Server>Force Showing to show hidden files, I even searched for it and can’t find it anywhere (I did find two under the plugins “akismet” and “woocommerce” but assume they are specific to thos plugins)
Did I somehow delete my .htaccess file??? How do I get this site back up and running???
Please help.
