How to make boxes editable

Here’s the site I’m working on. At the bottom of the home page are a couple boxes that are intended for current news items regarding the website. Right now, they are hard coded into the template. Does anyone know of a way I could make them editable through the WP Admin so the client can work with them easily? What would be the best way to do this?

I had considered making Pages for them and then using includes to pull them in, but I wonder if that’s logical.
