• I have access to log into my company’s site, but I cannot access the “appearances” option, nor can i access “editor” or make any big changes.

We have WP101 and U-Design on the sidebar, which I assume are elements of our theme/plugins.

However, they only allow me to do so much on the site. I want to be able to change elements of the site’s actual code, or at least have access to this part of the site.

I am new to this, and obviously I know not to mess with the code if I don’t get it. I just want to know how to become an administrator to the site, so I can learn how to fix things and then work on them.

And no, I do not have access to the directory (I think that’s the term). Also, the employee who built this site for us is unreachable. So maybe I’m being dumb about this but I don’t think I have access to wp-admin, like the actual file on your desktop I mean. The kind you upload through Cyberduck or whatever you use. I hope this makes sense.

Again, I’m new to this so bear with me…

Is there any way for me to do this?

You’ll need to ask whomever is the current administrator on the site to promote you.

There is a way to modify the database directly, but there is a chance that something else could unintentionally damaged, plus your company would probably want you to go through proper channels for a promotion anyway. 😉

    Thanks!

How do I figure out who the administrator is? No one here seems to know…

Is it listed in the database somewhere?

Also, is there a separate login for the administrator? LIke when you go to your sitename.com/wp-admin, is there a different login for the administrator?

No, the administrator logs in via the same URL.

Do you access to the MySQL database?

Yes, there is a different login for the Admin user.

If the person who setup your site is unreachable, you may have to ask your site host to help you – they should be able to look in your database and tell you who the Admin user is – the contact information is stored in the database.

If your Admin user is the same person who setup your site, and you have no other Admin users, then you’ll have to convince your site hosting company to modify the Admin user’s password and give it to you, or ‘promote’ you to an admin user – as James recommended, unless you are VERY well versed in working in databases and phpMyAdmin, then don’t try to do that yourself – you can do far worse damage to your site than just not being able to login as an Admin.

However, your site hosting company will likely require verification of your identity and authority to make such changes for you. If they don’t then the next order of business for you is to switch site hosting companies.

Where would that be located? Is it local to a computer or is it online?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, it’s been a while since I did any work building a site…

That’s through the hosting provider’s control panel.

Oh right, I forgot about that step.

I’m going to see what I can do with that.

And dont worry people I’m not going to mess with the actual code of my site. I have realized i am far too green to attempt that…

    Thanks for all the help!
