Are you editing is via the WP admin area or FTP?
There should be a button right below the editing area that says ‘Update File’. Click that.
No instead there is a line that reads:
“You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes. See the Codex for more information.”
Which is why I went onto change the file permissions to 777. Should I download the style file from FTP and edit it and upload it again, is that possible? – I haven’t tried that
What would you suggest?

EDIT: Also you can try making all of the files in the theme folder 777 if nothing else fixes the problem. This should not cause a security issue.
