It appears to be part of the sidebar.
Have you checked WP-admin –> Appearance –> Widgets?
Look at the HTML of your front page. I contains some rubbish. I seems to be wrong after line 137.
I could be that part of your theme is not loaded well or the theme is just crap.

Also check your header file.
Your theme does not appear to be one that is available on WordPress.org and it seems to date from about six years ago. Consequently it is not a good choice as so will not support WordPress features introduced since then and will not be coded to current standards.
I would recommend changing to a theme from http://wordpress.org/themes/ instead which can be supported here unlike the one you are using.
ok thanks – can anyone suggest anything similar too it

You can use the tag filters as criteria for your ideal website when searching for a theme here, any additional functionality can be sought from the plugin repository.
thanks. To be honest the main content e.g. reference guides etc do not need changing as this theme has proven popular on a very old CMS. I thought it be time to move it to WordPress
I have decided to officially move it all to WordPress as old CMS was not updated since 2010 so I thought time for a change.
In fairness their news system was a little on the untidy side
so when it is launched I will keep the reference guide to the ssite the same so people won’t know difference and a brand new designed theme for the news page.
Site has been going strong but as CMS not being updated and need to know WordPress for forseeable future time to move forward
1) still cannot find the code in header.php to get rid of the big blank gap before the blank part
2) I also have a > and cannot find to get rid of it
2) > removed – it was in sidebar.php

Have you contacted the theme developer?
Hello
Yes I sent through the website but there is no email on the website. Is anyone else getting about half an inch up the top in grey
I fixed it – it was on top of header.php – lines 14 to 18 thanks to all who tried to help
