I just updated to 2.3.3 (yesterday), and all was fine before that. Now, when I try to go to the homepage, I get a 404 error. The admin pages are fine, it’s just the homepage. I’ve tried to re-upload the index.php file several times, which hasn’t done anything.

hi, im having the same problem. AFter restoring a backup in my database, i can access all admin pages, all post pages, etc. but the index page doesnt display the posts, it justs load and gives a 404 error.
i dont know what to do, i have tried changing the theme, disabling all plugins, but it doesnt work. what can i do???
    thanks..

I just had a similar problem — 404 on the home page, but the rest of the site, incl. single posts and pages, works fine. No obvious cause, but at the same time I also noticed on a problem on couple other WP sites I have on the same server, sharing the same MySQL engine.

Those sites all of a sudden forget the categories a post is related to. This has happened occasionally in th past, and to fix it I have to bounce MySQL. So, I restarted MySQL and both the homepage 404 and the lack of categories problem went away.

I HATE not knowing exactly what’s wrong (other than “MySQL got confused”), but restarting the DB engine fixed the problem for me.

    Good luck!
