It’s not a text widget, though. One is supposed to show recent posts, and the other a search bar, but neither widget even appears at all on the page. Only the sidebars are there.

Right, well I can’t drag and drop them, either.
In that case I would check your browser, clean the cookies, temps etc, close and restart as well. If you have any other browser, please try that as well, just to see if this is a browser-specific issue. Please note that this would happen with any Theme because widgets are part of the WordPress itself and something is preventing them to work properly.
If that doesn’t work, deactivate all plugins and check the widgets again and your last step is to switch back to Twenty Eleven Theme and go back to Responsive!

Okay, I got them to move around, but they still don’t show up on the main page. They are in the right place on the widgets page, though.

Oh, you’re not using default layout that’s why 🙂 Home widgets are available only if default home page is used. You can switch back and reverse, please see: http://themeid.com/forum/topic/537/reading-settings-changing-default-homepage/
Now is there a way to hide certain elements like the headline?
