help…can’t…upload…images….
-
I am new to wordpress as well as computers and web design, I know enough to get by but I can’t fix my file permissions so that I can upload images. I’ve tried everything. I have windows xp and nothing seems to be working! I’ve been trying for days and I’m about to lose my mind (it’s a short put)

Maybe you can find the answer within one of these three threads. =) Well, hopefully..

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/50863?replies=2By the way, is that your actual site link in your name? I tried going there, but just got a blank white page. =(

I think I’m going to need it even simpler…I know it is important to secure your machine (oh, by the way thanks for the advice!) and (let me just say I’m a self taught computer hack and I only know what I know and not really what I need to know, if that makes any sense) what does it mean write the permissions of a file or folder? Do you do that in another mode or can you just do it through a browser like one for windows xp? Anyway, thanks so much.
psychographic.net or /blog for the fledgling blog.http://www.stadtaus.com/en/tutorials/chmod-ftp-file-permissions.php
You should also be able to change permissions via the host’s control panel, in the file manager.
You can do it through a browser if your webhosting company provides you something like CPanel. Or do it through your FTP program. If doing through FTP, usually when you right-click on a file on your server, a window will open where you might see something like Permissions, CHMOD, or Properties and then you can change it there.
However, in general (though not the rule), WP permissions are fine when you first upload them to your server, so changes usually are not necessary.
noodles, it’s ok. =) When “they” or anyone says about file permissions…they usually mean through the FTP software, it’s the software most people use to upload their files to their FTP directories.
With mine, I upload the files and such and then highlight what I want, then right click and scroll down to the Permissions for what I want.
I’ll try and find a link in the codex quick for you. Or unless someone else does before I finish posting this lol.. <–Hahahaha…I was right..

I was going to say about the CPANEL as well, with my host, they automatically make all the directories 755, then I go in and change accordingly if need be.
Also, in the CPANEL, I found it’s so much easier to just use the Fantastico to install WordPress. Then go into the FTP directory and manually chmod certain directories to a specific permission.
I think these might also be a bit of help, as well as the information the other two posters provided. =)

I wish I could say that those explinations I understood…but, alas, I am even more a novice than you suspect. someone walk me through it! I went two places, my control panel and mySQL page and couldn’t get at my files. I use dreamweaver to change anything on my files and don’t know what to do beyond that. I would be DEEPLy indebted to you all. thanks a million,
“I use dreamweaver to change anything on my files and don’t know what to do beyond that.”
OUCH! Right there might be a little reason for problems. =( To edit php or txt files and such. You should atleast use NotePad2. =) http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html
For the other issue, someone might be able to help you better through a Messenger or something, perhaps. Do you have a Messenger?

I know, I’m self taught so I don’t have a lot of the fundamental skills, I do have msn messenger, my name is efigment. thanks,
Messing around with files on your computer and changing permissions of the files on the host server – are two (2) different things. And totally non-related.
Like it or not, if you plan to have and maintain a website, you should learn the basics. There is no workaround, sorry.
E.g. when we talk about “files” – don’t go to MySQL which is a database and contains no files. When it comes to WP files, you can use DW only in code view, not wysiwyg. And that’s only on your computer.
For uploading files and manipulating files/permissions on the server – get a real FTP client, like Filezilla.
Temporarily, as it was said above if you have cPanel (that’s a brand of site admin interface on the server!) you can change permissions with that, too.As it is with every kind of study, it doesn’t need as much brain as much a$$… to sit down and read, try, read more, search, try, read etc š
OK, I got an ftp client surftp and looked at my files permissions, they are 755 for directories and 644 for files, but I still get the error message that my directory is not writable by the server. going loopy, thanks for all your help.
There was a post a few days back about this, and it turned out to be permissions on the upload folder itself I think. Let me see if I can find it.
Okay, start with this one while I see if I can find the other one….
The permissions you have are the default and they are fine and safe.
To make a folder writable you can try 666 and 777.http://wordpress.org/support/topic/61185?replies=7 – that’s the other one I remember. You have to chmod all of the relevant folders looks like….
