Help customizing theme

Forgive my noobness and have done some searching looking for answers. I am brand new to WP and this is the first site I have done totally on my own with it. The url is: http://cleaningmatterstous.com

Right now I have two Home pages showing in navigation as I think it defaulted to showing newest post on index page. I removed the post that was there but the nav link is still doubled. Can’t figure out how to remove it.

Second, I cant figure out how to change the text in footer that says: Text goes here. It shows in sidebar instead when I have the sidebar turned on.

This theme also has a feature where you can put your own header image in. I used the same size image as the default one but it still shows black on the edges at larger resolutions. Was wondering if it can be made fluid to show as all white at all resolutions. ie is also showing incorrectly.

Last, is there an easy way to change permalinks to make them pretty without doing Apache Mod_Rewrite? I know there is a custom field but I am not sure the syntax to use to make page ID read: http://cleaningmatterstous.com/page-name

The theme that I used as a start is “Elegant Grunge” by Michael Tyson.
