I received a text message with a verification code from wordpress.com, but I didn’t request this. Could this mean someone had tried to hack my account? I have wordpress installed across several self hosted websites so I have no idea where this hack could have come from!

    Where’s your site?

If it’s WordPress.COM then please ask on their forum.

This forum here is for self-hosted WordPress.ORG software installations.

    It’s a common misunderstanding. 😉

Well my websites are self hosted, but I use jetpack so I can log in with my .com account. I use the 2 step verification and I received a text message with a code for this, which usually happens when I log in. Perhaps it was an attempted log-in on my .com account but I find that strange as I don’t have a .com blog or anything, I just use it for jetpack.

I just got a bit confused why I received this code when I wasn’t logging in.
