You could look at the Vanilla forum. It is PHP MySQL based and is 100% open-source.
The developers forum is here. The lastest ver was released this month in BETA form and it includes themes very similar to how WP worlk. Each visitor to the forum can select their own style sheet of the ones you have selected for display.

bbPress shares developers and architecture with the well-known WordPress blogging software and the genesis of the project was in WordPress’ support forums which are a good example of a full implementation of bbPress.

I use XDForum from http://www.xdweb.net/ and believe it to be brilliant. It is lite in terms of features but we have already added a simple email link and will probably add sending pms shortly.
I use it at http://www.touchedbyadoption.org.uk/. If you need a hand configuring at all, the xdweb folks are very helpful.
