• Hi all…I’ve been looking up info on both and I haven’t found too much comparing the relative (dis)advantages of either. I need to create a photo gallery that I can embed into a blog fairly easilly. Hopefully without too much hassle.

I’m not sure about all the rules surrounding flickr accounts since this site is for a non-profit organization. At the same time, I’m not sure how often I have to worry about G2 updates (i’ve heard it can be an issue) Can ANYONE please tell me what some of the compelling features/differences/problems are with both/either? I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, here are a couple of pages that have given me a bit of direction though most users seem to only have experience with one or the other (which is okay too)

    Thanks!

  • G2 is stable. Finding the right theme, then “nudging” it to embed in WP can be frustrating. When you’ve found the right themes for both WP and G2, the embed is worth it. If you switch wp themes often, g2 will need to be tweaked, but many, many themes look fine. The wpg2 plugin admin menu has the “tweak html/css here” built in.

Flickr is too…simple. And costs money for more albums. Storage is on their terms. Your pics promote their site.

G2 is more complex, intimidating. All you need is the space on your server. Storage is yours, all yours.

G2 can be habit forming, you’ll tinker endlessly at first.

G2 can be as private or as public as you like, adding users/groups/permissions is as easy as managing any web server.

Flickr has a commercial look and feel. G2 can look any way you want.

One G2 update in the last 8? months. Click. No problems.(I use cpanel/fantastico and made no edits to core files).

G2 wins, so big, so good. G2’s iphoto plugin is a masterpiece on its own, too. I have a Drupal5 install as a portal and G2 looks even better there.

Configuring the wpg2 plugin is easy-peezy. Enter your g2 url. Done.

I use both. I use Flickr as a showcase for some images, or to participate in some of the groups there. I also use it for larger versions of my images than I want to use on my own site. I paid for the “pro” account to let me do this.

As dsader said, WP/G2 integration works beautifully. Once I’d tweaked it a bit, the G2 pages blended into my site (I use a home-grown, chopped around WP theme).

    They both have their uses.

If you want quick and easy, and you’re prepared to pay if you want to upload a lot of images, Flickr is useful, and there are some nice tools that link into it (fd’s Flickr Toys and Blockrocker’s GeoTagging) which can add a lot. And you can interact with other users who might never have found your blog.

If you want full control, Gallery2 is indeed the winner. Lots of add-on modules, open development, lots of peer support.
