I need some guidance on file permissions.

What should be permission set for .htaccess file? I will be using it with WP.

Also, what should be the file permission set for

    /wp-content/uploads/2008/11

WP stores uploaded images in this folder. Please elaborate on individual permissions on each folder should be set. What should be the permission set for images files itself?

    Thanks for help.

With some hosts, you might get away with 755 for wp-content and sub-folders, but then again you might find you need 777 on some hosting arrangements.

WordPress developers say 777 is okay but you will get arguments about that.

    Thanks for this.

My host requires me to change permission to 777. I am not very comfortable about this.

I believe there is a plugin that goes and check file permissions, I have forgot the name of it, if you know this, can you please send me the url?

    Thanks.

    Its called WP-Security-Scan.

My blog is quite an old version 2.05 (I’m about to upgrade, honest!) and Security Scan didn’t like the way my folders were at 777. When I CHMODed mine to 644 as it recommended, I then couldn’t access my blog and my theme reverted to the default after I moved back to 777.

There doesn’t seem to be any help available for this plugin. Not that I could see, anyway.

So, be careful, is what I’m saying, if you’re just changing for change sake!

You should never be required to use 777 on a properly configured and secure server.

I’d personally avoid any host that requires me to use 777 for functionality… it’s just asking for trouble in my opinion.
