I experienced the same problem. I had to deactivate the download monitor plugin to get back the Featured image option in the side bar. I am using Simple grid theme premium at http://motcap.com

I am having this problem with version 1.6.4 of this plugin, even though it was supposedly fixed in 1.6.1.
