I’m pretty sure that error means that $credentials is a string, not an array. Before trying to beat the code into submission…
What WP version are you using?
Is ‘Broken Link Checker 0.4.10’ supposed to be compatible with that version?

Broken Link Checker Plugin is Active and there is No Broken Link on site.

Since you’ve deleted Broken Link Checker, you shouldn’t be getting an error message that mentions Broken Link Checker. How does the error read now?
Also, is this a brand new install or did you upgrade from a previous version of WP?
I am getting the same error after upgrading to the latest version of WP. I do not install many plugins so I couldn’t say for sure if the upgrade broke it. I just know that I get the error now. I can still install plugins manually, but not automatically. Any help is appreciated.

When I checked my plugin directory I noticed that there was an upgrade for wp-stats. When I tried to automatically upgrade the plugin I received this message:
Fatal error: Cannot unset string offsets in /var/www/wrestling/htdocs/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 676
When I upgraded WP, I deactivated all of my plugins first, then upgraded and reactivated the plugins. The line from file.php is as follows:
unset($credentials['port']);
Any help is appreciated.

Here is Solution Copying from above
Open your PHPmyAdmin and select your Database of WP
Go to “wp_options” table
Find “ftp_credentials”
and Clear/ Dalete the Value
It will Work Fine 🙂

My problem started out when I tried re-directing the index.php from the /wp folder to the root.
I did not disable the NextGen gallery first.
I got everything working – except the NextGen gallery. When I’d click on an album in my site, it wouldn’t be found.
NO biggie – I figured I’d just uninstall, then re-install the NextGen plug-in and try again.
Got the error Fatal error: cannot unset string offsets in /home/yada yada /file.php on line 676
SO I deleted the plug-in folder from the server, then tried re=installing it through WP, and the same error comes up.
I have no idea what a PHPmyAmin is (from the instructions above), nor do I know where the Database of WP is, or the wp_options table…
any advice, please?
