I have the same problem.
The opengraph image associated with the og:image tag does not update when you change the link using the tool.
This requires an urgent fix by Yoast.
I am having the same issue. Please post a solution or release an update. I love this plugin but I really need this feature to work!:)
I uploaded an image for my homepage in the Yoast SEO Social tab where it says “If you want to override the image used on Facebook for this post, upload/choose an image or add the URL here. The recommended image size for Facebook is 1200 x 628px.” I did this several days ago and have been testing it off and on ever since. Unfortunately the image is not showing up when I paste the URL of my homepage into a facebook post. I have gone to the facebook debug page (ttps://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug) as recommended by several blogs and they reported under the “These are the raw tags that we found” a Meta Tag for the image that is not the image uploaded in the Yoast SEO social tab <meta property=”og:image” content=”http://……..jpg” />. Facebook is not matching with what the Yoast SEO social tab is stating. This would be great if it was fixed.
Joy oh Joy – today it worked. I don’t know if what I did 2 days ago (see above post) needed 24 or 48 hours to work or it was just dumb luck. but the image I uploaded to the Yoast SEO Social tab to override the image used on facebook is now the one working when I paste the URL of my homepage on facebook. Hurrah!
I understand your frustration with this particular issue although it is a Facebook “working as intended” rather than a plugin bug.
When you change images, Facebook expects you to use their debug tool to “flush” or “clear” the caching on the URL.
This URL is one you will want to bookmark to resolve that problem and to deal with it any time in the future: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

Just tried it..Unfortunatelty, it still didn’t work for me. Changed the image, then on the debugger I typed in the URL then clicked on “Fetch new scrape information” and when I shared it, it was still the same old image.
The image you are setting is known as a default image and is only polled by Facebook when it can not find another suitable image. It sounds like the page/post/article you are checking has other suitable images… and thus you need to specify one for the item in the post/page editor.
“Then, set a good default image. This will be used when you have a post or page that does not contain an image, so it can still be shared with maximal visibility.” https://yoast.com/social-media-optimization-with-wordpress-seo-by-yoast/#hfb
