Extra Line in Sidebar

I have an extra line (space) in my sidebar due to an extra

<li></li>
with php code that has to do with archives (If this is a monthly archive… yearly archive…) in between. The code doesn’t return any information so it just shows up as an extra line that I would like to get rid of.

Can anyone tell me what it is that I need this php code for? I can paste it in if it is unclear what I am talking about.
