• I installed WP using this tutorial. And it all ran correctly and i finished my website. But i was expecting the export to be something i’m used to (as i only recently started using CMS-es, wordpress is my fist) like a directory with wp-admin, wp-content etc, and an index.php file, because till now i have made my websites the “old school” way and thats the structure I’m used to uploading to a live server. Instead when i use the default WP tool for exporting i get a .XML file, and when i export with phpmyadmin(even though it gives me some options) it exports as a sql file. Does anyone know how i can export my website in the structure I’m used to or link me to some further reading on what i am supposed to do with these files (Im writing first here, but i will do my research 🙂 ).

Additional info: Im running a Desktop version of Ubuntu 15.04 and am working on my website locally (localhost).

  • In WordPress parlance, you are “Moving WordPress”. Or, at least, that is what I think you will want to do.

Official Codex doc. is here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress

More recently, the Duplicator plugin has become an alternative that is much easier if it works for your move. If not, the Codex is the best way to go.

The duplicator plugin seems simple. I’m gonna try that.

As for the official codex page, i read it, and one of the steps i dont get, and its the first step, which says

    Download your existing site files.

And thats the problem, i cant download files, i only get one file. I do apologize for my slowness, and i appreciate you taking time to reply.

“Download your existing site files.” probably means the directory /var/www/html/wordpress where “Download” means you FTP it or simply access it directly.
