ServMask instructed me to downgrade to version 2.0.5 and it seems to have worked.

to solve the backup tool stuck issues (this should work for almost every backup plugin):
1) check folders and file permissions as mentioned on plugin help/guide.
2) set all files and directories to www-data user.
