Please make sure your host has allow_url_fopen enabled for PHP. Otherwise, we’ll be releasing an update in version 1.1.1 that will create a new method of fetching images that will also resolve this issue.

    Hello,

My host’s website says the following:

If enabled, allow_url_fopen allows PHP’s file functions to retrieve data from remote locations such as an FTP server or web site, and could lead to code injection vulnerabilities. Typically, these code injection vulnerabilities occur from improper input filtering when passing user-provided data to PHP functions. Disabling this function will help considerably in stopping your site(s) from being compromised, as well as help thwart the unauthorized use of our servers for abusive or malicious purposes.

    Are they being overly cautious?

WordPress.com VIP, which is the most secure and hardened WordPress host available and caters to the largest sites on the internet permits that code. Yes, they’re being overly cautious.

If they won’t allow it, the next version of the plugin will fix this for you.

Version 1.1.2 was just released which now supports remote images. Please set Use Remote Images to ‘yes’ in the plugin settings under Settings > Apple News > Advanced Settings.

This will allow the Apple News API to retrieve images remotely from your site rather than bundle them with the request, which will eliminate this potential error with your web host.
