It would be very strange if manual worked and automatic didn’t since it is the same code.
What version did you upgrade from? There haven’t been any changes to the email server access code in a long time.
What does the email server logs look like when it works?
Are there errors in your php/web server logs?
You can try installing the support AddOn to collect more detailed logging info. See http://postieplugin.com/downloads/support-addon/

AddOn installing
You’re running out of memory as you can see. The only options are to allocate more memory or remove the email that has the large attachment from your server.
OK.
I increased the memory to 128M
But is it possible to somehow optimize the script so that it does not “consume” so much memory?
The amount of memory needed is based on the size of your emails.
