  • Are you able to obtain an actual error log file? This will help greatly in diagnosing the error.

Also, have you reviewed this yet: Debugging in WordPress

The website encountered an error while retrieving http://churchintouraine.org/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly

    Ask your host.

Thankyou for your answers, Jason and kmessinger.

How does one obtain an error log file?

I have asked my host OVH. I spent 15 minutes waiting for someone to answer the telephone on a premium call line, after having been charged 3 euros to be told that their telephone number has changed.
So a posted a request for assistance 2 days on their site. No reply as yet.
Any ideas what I have configured incorrectly and how does one go back into WP set-up to correct mistakes.

    Thanks in advance

    Dear kmessinger.

I’ve changed the WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) from the original settings of http://www.churchintouraine.org to http://churchintouraine.org but I still have the error message HTTP 500 Page not found.

    All help appreciated.

You are getting this message now, Error establishing a database connection which means there is something wrong in your wp-config.php file.

I have cleaned out my database completely (I had originally started with Joomla! but I just couldn’t understand their way of working)and I have reinstalled a new copy of WP.
This has brought me back to my original problem. When I wish to make any changes via the Dashborad I get a spinning circle and when I click on “View Site” I get the HTTP 500 error message.
I’ve checked via Filezilla and phpmyadmin and they inidcate that the WP files are uploaded to the server.

I haven’t been able to find an error log file. Is it in Filezilla, WP or phpmyadmin?

    Any ideas please?

So you can get to the dashboard?

What is on these two lines?
    WordPress Address (URL)
    Site Address (URL)

    Thanks for your reply kmessinger.
Yes, I can access the WordPress Dashboard.

    The following data is shown…

    WordPress Address (URL): http://www.churchintouraine.org
    Site Address (URL): http://www.churchintouraine.org

    Regards

The error log would come from your host.

I think the problem is at the server. Which means that you need to get support from your host. If they don’t answer your questions then you have the wrong host.

Use whatever file management your host provides and look in the root folder. Is there an index.htm or an index.php file?

    Dear Kmessinger,
Thanks for your reply. The delay in responding to you has been due to a dialogue of the deaf with the host company OVH. After proposing several unfruitful solutions such as altering the .htaccess file, deleting the .htaccess file, changing passwords, they threw in the towel and admitted defeat. Left to my own devices, I decided to go back to square one. I deleted all the WP files via Filezilla and then deleted all the files on the database with phpMyAdmin. I then found an “add a module function” on the host’s Dashboard that directs to an auto setup for WP, Joomla and others. I clicked, it downloaded everything and I’m up and running.
Still no wiser about how I got into the mess in the first place.

Anyway, the problem is solved and I would like to thank you very much for your help.

    Best Regards
    Ludo
