"Error establishing database connection"

    A couple of days ago my website started running extremely slow and now is displaying the message “Error establishing database connection” on the front and back ends more frequently.

    I have double checked all my database login credentials in the wp-config file and they are definitely correct. I have also repaired and optimized my database, disabled all my plugins and installed Cloud Flare (as recommended by my host). None of it fixed the issue.

    I am with bluehost and contacted their support several times, who said the problem was caused because I have not optimized my website and it’s using unnecessary server resources. They suggested I need to purchase their $300 site optimization for further help, which seems like a rip off to me. Otherwise they said to contact my developer to optimize my website, which I did, who said that it was a problem with the host.

    I am not too familiar with coding so I would love any kind of assistance on this as I’m not getting much help with my host.

    I had something similar happen to me recently.
    My database was full of a bunch of un-needed stuff.
    I thought I had taken care of “optimizing” but was wrong.

    Did you remove things like revisions, transients and leftover stuff from old plugins?

    Before you start to clean up the database be sure you have a full backup.

    I don’t think you need to pay for an optimization service from the bluehost but you might need to set aside some time to clean things up or as a last resort if you can’t get cooperation from host, it might be time to make a change to a different host.

    How do I go about removing things like revisions and transients? I’m quite new to this all so I’m still learning!

    It seems as though I may have to switch hosts soon. Thank you for your help!

    do you have a backup system in place?

    look in your database:
    what is the size of your wp-posts table and wp-options table?
    what is the size of your largest 3 tables in your database?
    can you list out the tables that are in your database and share them with me?
