• I’ve got WP up and running. Now I want to change the look of my blog. I know basic html. But when I look at “index.php I am totally lost. Where do I start. Do I need a book on css? Do I need a book on php?

  • No books 🙂
For the css, you can have a look here:

Ask as much as you need to here as well.

In all honesty, the best way is to start “messing things up”. Find out what a link in the template is, find out how to create a new “category” of links in your sidebar, all of this can be done with simple cut/paste and trial/error. Plus, it’s good fun.

I’m idiot so be patient with me. I’m a little confused about editing the WP css file. Am I able to download it, edit it in note pad like any other file, or do I need a special tool?

eyebeat – that’s not a stupid question at all !

You need no special tool, and Notepad works just as well as a $500 editor 🙂

I asked this question because when I tried just that, the file looked pretty weird. Is there something I’m missing. I’m too scared to just edit the file through the admin feature. I want to save the original and then play. I figure that’s the only way I’m going to understand all of this.

    stupidly yours,

CSS can look wierd, but to me, php looks wierder 🙂

Running it through an optimiser can neaten things up and bring a regularity to it:

The above is a fantastic link, worth bookmarking.

And playing ? Yup, far and away the best thing to do.

    Have fun !
