Edit css stylesheet in child theme
-
Where do I locate the “Editor” so I can edit the style.css for my Child Theme of Twenty Eleven? There used to be a place where I could actually see the code, but with the newer updates of WordPress itself, I can no longer locate the “editor”. Can someone provide some insight? It would be greatly appreciated.

Hello wchoa,
Hope you’re well! š
You can locate the “Editor” by navigating to Dashboard >> Appearance >> Editor. Refer to this image if you are still confuse: http://prntscr.com/5tixu2
Hope it helps! š
Best Regards,
CalvinHello Calvin,
I am well and hoping the same for you.
When I navigate to the dashboard and hover over the “Appearance” button my only choices are: Themes – Customize – Widgets – Menus – Header – Background – Theme OptionsAs you can see, there is no “Editor” choice. The Customize lets me do a few things like: Site Title & Tagline – Colors – Layout – Header Image – Background Image – Navigation – Widgets – Static Front Page but nowhere do I see a way to edit the code itself.
I am using a Child Theme of Twenty Eleven and WordPress 4.1and am open to any suggestions. The other option, which I would prefer to avoid for several reason, would be to into the panel and edit the code there, but I prefer to do it directly in WordPress.
If you click on Tools, then Child Theme, a page (Child Theme Configurator). You will find what you need here.
When I click on “Tools” the only options I have are: Import – Export – Forums & Websimon Tables which I believe is a plugin I have installed.
Any other suggestions? I am puzzled!Have you activated your Child Theme?
See this image: http://prntscr.com/5ts4laYes sir, Child theme is activated and has been for a couple of years. That’s why I am so puzzled as to why I can’t find the Editor. I am on a Mac computer, but don’t think that would be an issue. Using the Safari browser. I will try another browser. I used Firefox, but that is exactly the same.
wchoa – sounds like you have more experience than I do! Hope you figure it out. My only other thought is to try to deactivate plugins, 1 by 1, to see if a recently added plugin changed the menu. Good luck!
times – Maybe a bit more experience time wise, but believe me, it’s a never ending learning experience and mostly, for me, a challenge to figure out. I will take your advise & try the plugin routine. I haven’t added any new ones in a long time, only performed the updates, But maybe one of the updates changed things a bit. Have a great evening and thanks for your input.
Try going directly to the page:
http://mydomain.com/wp-admin/theme-editor.php
Of course, substitute your own domain name for mydomain.com.That tells me that I do not have sufficient permissions to access this page. Does that mean I need to go into the panel and change the permissions? If so, to what?
That would be weird that you have permissions to use all other pages but not that particular page. Maybe there’s a plugin installed that disables the theme editor? And it’s your own child theme of the plain-vanilla TwentyEleven theme and not some commercial derivative of TwentyEleven? If you switch from your child theme to the plain TwentyEleven theme, does the Editor option appear under Appearance?
CrouchingBruin – I activated the plain-vanilla TwentyEleven theme and still no Editor, either under “Appearance” or “Tools” as mentioned above. AND, I just deactivated every plugin with both the Plain-vanilla and child theme and still no “Editor”. Does this suggest I need to reinstall WordPress and if so, do I lose my website?
Hey there guys,
Hope you all are well! š
Do you have the latest theme version? Perhaps some file permission in the back-end? Could you make sure you have the right permission for your wordpress install?
Also, try clearing your browser cookies and cache.
Best Regards,
CalvinHello Calvin,
Yes, I have the latest theme version. I have cleared browser cookies & cache and even tried a different browser.
Can you tell me where to check on the permissions, what the correct permissions should be and how to change them? CrouchingBruin gave me a link to go to the page directly, but it tells me “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page”. Which to me seems strange since I am the Admin for the site and can do anything else. Nonetheless, where & how do I check or change the permissions if needed.
Would it be beneficial to reinstall WordPress, or the theme itself? Can either or both be done without losing my site?
Hey there wchoa,
Hope you’re well! š
To know if you have file permission I suggest you contact your hosting provider.

Yes, it is good to do that but I suggest you clone your site in your local host first and see if the error still there. If still unsolved, then manually updating the wordpress ( only not the theme ) maybe you next step.
A good resource to clone your live site to localhost environment: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-move-live-wordpress-site-to-local-server/
To manual re-install same version of wordpress ( don’t do this before the cloning method) :
