Displaying Content When Category Selected

Is it possible for a category to display content?

I’m using the Exposito theme and have my menu set up using the collapsing categories plugin, and so when I click on a category, the pages for each section expand below it. What I would ideally like to happen is to display content as soon as I click on a category. Currently, whatever is on display stays on display until a new page is selected.

Basically, each page has a specific theme, but I would love to be able to display a hand picked selection of images when the category is clicked, as if to say, “Hey, look at all this that can be found here!” Sort of like a “best of” section.

I’m not sure if this is super easy or not at all possible, but I’m not able to find any info on it.

Even something like this that displays the most recent post would be helpful, but that’s not really what I’m looking for.
