I was having some problems with my static homepage. Edits would not save properly, and for a while I got the “are sure you want to do this message”. After a lot of fussing, I deleted the existing homepage, and replaced it. This actually was not simple, because it added itself back to the active pages several times after I deleted it. I finally did delete, and then permanently delete, the file. I created a new page with the same title, but a different link name.

The site is now coming up properly on my mobile devices, but the old (deleted!) version is still coming up on two different desktop computers in two different browsers. I have cleared the caches, to no avail. It seems like a server-side cache, but why would that be device dependent? And where would it be caching, anyhow?

    Help!

It sounds like your webhost has server based caching. Who do you use? Have you tried contacting them?

I’m using hostgator. I haven’t contacted them yet, but I can’t find any reference in the control panel or help system.

One of our clients came to us from Hostgator. HG was absolutely using Varnish on their servers. I suggest contacting them and asking them to clear your cache on their end.

Well, for what it’s worth, Hostgator says it’s got to be caching on my ISP… Sigh.

We can find out for sure. Have a friend that hasn’t visited the site to load the page and tell you what s/he sees. If s/he sees the new version, it would seem to be local to your machine. If they see the old version, then we’ll know for sure that it’s caching.

OK, here’s how it ended up, from the for-what-it’s-worth file. The “dead” page was loading on my Windows 7 machine with both IE and Firefox, and my husband’s Windows 7 machine with Firefox. However, the correct page was loading on my Android phone and tablet, as well as Opera Mobile on my Windows machine.

As a total hail Mary, I rebooted our router, and this fixed the problem. Since there should be no cache in the router, I have no explanation.

But now I’m trying to edit the page again, and when I try to save the changes, I’m getting the “Are you sure you want to do this?” again, which is how the problem started in the first place. I can’t even get simple text changes to save.
