• I’m trying to delete an old wordpress site and build a new wordpress website to take its place. I’m not loving how the first one turned out and the builder isn’t available to fix it. how do I do this?

  • If you do not like its looks, a different theme could give you a fresh start. What is it you are not liking?

My old host/web designer wouldn’t work on it for under $500.00, so I played around with it. I got it just where I wanted it then decided to run the updates that it was suggesting I do. After the updates the site just stopped working. When I asked what I could do of the designer he said it would take him several hours to figure it out. Somewhere to the tune of 1,000.00. My business is a small family farm – I can’t afford that, so I thought I’d just delete the site and build a new one. One I could handle.
I really kick myself for running the updates! Anyway, my web designer shut the site down per my request… now I’m trying to start over, but I just keep getting the error message that my domain is already being used….

Not doing the updates at all would not have been a good idea, and it would likely take no more work for you to learn to repair and handle what you have than to begin from scratch. However, you could ask your host to reset or “nuke” your account and help you reset your server account password to take over completely.

I know. I would have had to do them eventually. It’s just ironic that I finally got the site where I wanted it and all of that work went down the drain with a single update.

My host keeps telling me that it’s going to take time and money…money I honestly just don’t have at the moment. He said he shut the site down already and gave me a link to save the files in case I wanted to revisit it at some point. I already know that I can’t fix it, so I thought if I built a new site and simplified it I would be better off.

I really don’t want to go to Yahoo or some other website building site…. I really did like WordPress. I keep thinking there must be a way for me to get rid of the old and start anew.

    I would find someone else.

So there isn’t a way to delete a site off from WordPress and start over?? Seems illogical.

wordpress.com (completely separate from wordpress.org) has servers for hosting sites, but wordpress.org (here where you are posting right now) does not host any sites. What you have is what is known as a “self-hosted WordPress site” being hosted wherever it is hosted. I would guess your host might also be the Registrar for your domain, so everything related to you site — domain, installation, security, development, maintenance, etc. — is dependent upon full access to your hosting account there at your host. In your particular case while assuming you want something solid while keeping everything as simple as possible, you might consider asking your host to help you point your domain to the wordpress.com servers where you will have far fewer webmaster types of things to be concerned about. You would still use your own domain name such as ourfarm.com or whatever, and your only expense would be the annual domain registration renewal unless you decided to purchase some addition features available at wordpress.com.

I’m the owner of the domain and it’s registered with Melbourne IT, so I could use a different web design company, (yahoo and the likes), but I really liked working with WordPress. I’m currently trying to host with Hostgator… I’ll try reaching out to my original web designer, but I have little faith that he’ll do anything without charging me out the nose. Bummer for me I guess.
Thanks so much for your time.

It is not my intent to try to talk you into using wordpress.com, but please do give that some thought. You would not have access to the themes and plugins here at wordpress.org or anywhere else beyond wordpress.com, yet neither would you ever again have to spend large sums of money for a site for “a small family farm…a new one. One I could handle.”
