Custom WP_Query in template

Just wondering if you can use custom wp queries in a yarpp template?

Basically I want to run two post loops within a template combining thumbnails and lists and the only way I can think of doing this without super complicated css selectors or jQuery is to run two separate post loops.

Is this possible?
